Halfpenny London

Meet Feathers | Halfpenny London Stockist

Kate HalfpennyComment

Many years ago, Halfpenny London started out in the front room of my house. So much has happened since then, in life as well as business. It’s a lifetime ago, yet also feels like yesterday. The business grew quickly and I soon outgrew that room and opened the boutique in Woburn Walk and it wasn’t long before the first wholesale account was opened. Now, I’m so proud to say Halfpenny London is stocked in some of the most beautiful boutiques in the UK, Europe, USA and Asia. Each one of those boutiques is run by an epic team of driven, passionate people and I wanted to introduce you to them over the coming months.

First up is the fabulous Feathers Bridal in Birmingham. Holly and the team there are new to the Halfpenny family and we’re so pleased to welcome them to the club! We caught up with Holly to find out more about her and her lovely store.

Holly, tell us a little about yourself.

“I'm a lover of beautiful, unnecessary things. I say 'pah!' to practicality and find joy in the quirky and unusual aspects of life. I believe that kindness brings happiness. I'm the proud owner of two fabulously feral children (aged one and three), a bonkers Labrador and a very patient husband. I love to experience new things, meet new people and eat glorious food.”

How did you get into the bridal business?

“I adored planning my own wedding but the one part I found difficult - but the one part I thought I'd enjoy the most - was finding my dress. I wanted something a little different that showed my personality and was totally uninspired by what was on offer with all of the dresses merging into one. I ended up having mine made. I spent 12 years working in PR and whilst on maternity leave with my second child, I decided that I wanted to do something I could put my heart and soul into. I wanted to combine my love of beautiful things and the desire to help women feel totally fabulous, with my ambition to run my own business. And I wanted to be in a positive, happy environment. From my own bridal experience, I felt that there was a gap in the market in Birmingham for a luxury boutique with personality that provides modern women with gowns that show their individuality and style. And so Feathers was born!”

Describe your boutique in one word:

“Personality.”

Where is your boutique and why did you choose that area?

“It's in a beautiful listed Victorian Arcade, The Great Western Arcade, in Birmingham city centre. The setting is perfect, the building has character and it's ideally located by two of the city's main train stations for brides looking to visit us from outside of the area.”

What can brides to be expect when visiting your boutique?

“A big smile! There are no 'Pretty Woman' moments in our boutique. We do luxury bridal with a difference, so each piece has its own personality and a sprinkling of something unique. We love to get to know our brides and hear all about their big day, so expect a friendly face and to meet someone who truly wants the bride to leave feeling on top of the world.”

What do you love about Birmingham?

“Birmingham is full of character. The food scene is brilliant - we have the most Michelin-starred restaurants outside of London! The shopping is fab and the people are proud to be from here.”

Any insider tips for the area?

“Don't forget to look up! The buildings are beautiful if you take the time to look around you. Visit the iconic jewellery quarter for one-of-a-kind rings.”

What drew you to Halfpenny London?

“I fell in love with the idea of a collection of separates, so that a bride can mix and match gorgeous pieces to make her perfect wedding day outfit. Each design is packed full of character and style and they are made utterly beautifully.”

Which is your favourite piece from the Halfpenny London collection and why?

“Hard question! Either the Maribou skirt or Bumble tee.”

If you could use one word to describe Halfpenny London, what would it be?

“Versatile.”

Feathers does luxury bridal with personality. Their Birmingham city centre boutique exists to give modern, fashion-forward women the chance to let their individuality and style shine through on their wedding day so any nearby brides-to-be should get an appointment booked in this gorgeous store ASAP!

Love,

Kate & the Halfpennys xx

Stunning Riki | A real Halfpenny London bride

Kate HalfpennyComment

Beautiful bride Riki married her new hubby Michael in may this year. The couple hosted a vibrant, fun wedding in the Algarve and it’s giving me epic wanderlust. Their big day was full of sunshine and colour and I love the balloon installation which they created as a statement piece of decoration.

Riki found her Halfpenny London outfit at The Wedding Gallery in Northern Ireland and had a lovely experience at our rockstar stockist.

“I was unsure if I even wanted to wear anything bridal so choose only to visit The White Gallery in Northern Ireland as it’s incredible! Halfpenny London is exclusively stocked by The White Gallery and I was sure that if I was going to be in bridal, that I’d be in Halfpenny London. I’ve long been a fan of Kate’s work as it embraces the more modern, individual bride. Rachel Morgan at The White Gallery is a true pro. She’s super stylish and has a great eye for what suits your style and body shape. With Rachel’s guidance, we created a look that was different yet felt very like me. I loved the beauty and intricacy of the Susie skirt and we worked to create a dramatic top with awesome sleeves that Halfpenny London absolutely delivered on.”

Riki decided against having any flowers and went for statement jewellery instead. Her neon pink Vivienne Westwood pearl necklace and Victoria Beckham bangles are so fun! She also wore her grandfather’s ring on a simple necklace and borrowed a solid gold chain link bracelet which her lucky charms were added on to.

After all, as Riki says: “More is more right….?”

Congratulations you two! Wishing you every happiness in your new adventures together.

Love,

Kate & the Halfpennys xxx

Beautiful Juliet | A real Halfpenny London bride

Kate HalfpennyComment

Our gorgeous bride Juliet and her hubby Nick said their “I do’s” in May this year. The couple wanted a fun, London wedding where their guests had a wonderful time and judging by the pictures that’s exactly what they did. Their big day was filled with love and laughter and I’m over the moon Juliet chose to wear Halfpenny London to walk down the aisle.

“I had tried on dresses before and became very disheartened with the whole experience. I don’t often wear dresses and especially white dresses, I wanted to find an outfit, that looked beautiful but I still felt like “me”. It quickly became very overwhelming. I knew as soon as I saw the Riri skirt I wanted it. I knew as soon as I saw all the faces of my best women that I had to have it. It was perfect. I felt beautiful, confident, bridal, happy and I knew Nick, my now husband, would be blown away.”

The Riri skirt is a real showstopper and Juliet looked EPIC in it! It really was the perfect outfit for her. She chose to wear her grandmother’s ring and her mother’s necklace which was a lovely, personal touch. The bouquet and gorgeous flower crown, made by Juliet’s friend and florist Anna Wallis, completed the look.

Congratulations Juliet & Nick! Thank you so much for sharing your big day with us and we wish you all the best for a marriage as gorgeous as your wedding.

Love,

Kate & the Halfpennys xxx

I couldn’t wait to re-share these gorgeous pictures when photographer Luigi Reccia tagged us on facebook. This wedding has it all… a stunning couple, beautiful setting and fabulous fashion!

Beautiful bride Cindy married Antimo at Villa Baia Dei Caesars in a relaxed, fun ceremony followed by a huge party. The couple were joined by their family from all over the word and Luigi captured every moment in a stunning reportage style.

Cindy wore our Georgie skirt and Lenny cami from our exclusive Net-A-Porter collection and paired it with a killer pair of Malone Souliers heels. She looks utterly gorgeous!

Stunning Chloe | A real Halfpenny London bride

Kate HalfpennyComment

Beautiful bride Chloe married her new hubby, Ben, at Stoke Newington Town Hall followed by a reception at The Star Pub in Highgate. The wedding was full of personal touches and the couple really put their own stamp on the day.

I’m in love with the epic floral arch by Florescence, it’s truly spectacular, and Chloe’s Willow dress suits her down to a T. These beautiful pictures are by Caitlin + Jones and you can see the full gallery over on Rock My Wedding here.

Congratulations to Chloe & Ben! We wish you every happiness in your new adventures together.

Kaws | Our Wedding Dress of the Week

Kate HalfpennyComment

Meet Kaws… This top was such a joy to design this season. I designed the beading myself and it’s been a real pleasure to see it take shape. Sheer tulle is adorned with stars and feathers to create a beautiful floral motif and the keyhole back and gathered sleeves are just delicious!

Shown here with the Oliver dress, the Kaws top can also be worn over a slip or cami and looks gorgeous with one of our overskirts for extra drama!

Beautiful Briony | A real Halfpenny London bride

Kate HalfpennyComment

Beautiful bride Briony married her new hubby Mark in December last year. The couple wanted to celebrate both their backgrounds so chose to be married in an English style cottage garden at Lion Gate Lodge in the Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney followed by a reception at the Quay Restaurant on Sydney Harbour.

“The English garden was a nod to Mark being English and I was born and lived in Sydney until I moved to the UK to be with Mark. Sydney Harbour was also an opportunity to show Sydney at it’s best to our friends and family who had travelled to celebrate with us. It was relaxed but also elegant and was a great party with lots of time for dancing.”

Briony knew she wanted something ‘a little bit different’ for her big day and wasn’t having any luck. Our boutique was her third and final destination – definitely third time lucky!

“[My appointment] was 4.30pm on a Friday afternoon after a particularly stressful day at work. It was just so relaxed and informal that I knew instantly I wanted to buy my dress from Halfpenny. I tried on a number of different styles and combinations – I loved the Maribou skirt but wanted it full as opposed to A-line and the Halfpennys said that was possible with the addition of the pewter waistband which added some ‘bling’. The Daffodil top was flattering and matched the skirt perfectly. I walked out so happy and couldn’t believe I had to wait 6 months until I could actually try it on again!

I loved the fabric of the skirt in particular – it had the wow factor because of the feathers and I’m known for my love of sparkle and sequins so it was just perfect. I could not wipe the smile off my face and was just desperate to get to the wedding day so I could wear it. As my mum and my bridesmaids were in Australia they didn’t get to see me in the dress until the actual wedding day – this made it extra special as it was somewhat a surprise to them too.”

Briony completed her look with a crown and earrings from Tilly Thomas Lux, Jimmy Choo shoes and gorgeous flowers by Red Fragrance Floral Design to match the couple’s pink and rose gold colour scheme. She looked absolutely epic on her big day and I’m so thrilled we were able to play a part in her wonderful day. Wishing the newlyweds every happiness in their new lives together!

Orko & Parry | Our Wedding Dress of the Week

Kate HalfpennyComment

Meet Orko & Parry… Our wedding dress of the week. This look is perfect for city brides! If you’re a fabric aficionado like me you’ll fall in love with the exquisite hammered silk fabric of the Orko skirt and jacket. The texture feels luxurious against the skin and looks incredible when the light catches it. They look amazing with the silk Parry pussybow blouse and can also look incredible with a corset or cami.

Health doesn't have a dress size

Kate HalfpennyComment

I read the article by Tanya Gold in The Telegraph with dismay. I certainly wouldn’t live up to Ms Gold’s body standards and do you know what? I’m ok with that.

I’m a size 22. I am healthy. I exercise. I am not pre-diabetic. I also wear sportswear.

I completely agree we should look after our bodies but health doesn’t have a dress size. Ms Gold has made a huge assumption about everyone over a size 12 and it’s completely inappropriate. Some people will never have a body like a traditional shop mannequin no matter how hard they try.

I’ve spent the last 20 years dressing stunning women of all shapes and sizes and I honestly thought we were getting to a place in society where we’d moved on from talk like this. My entire philosophy is based on being the best version of YOURSELF. Not what someone else thinks you should be/look like. You are equally amazing whether you’re a size 10 or 24 or anything else.

I think it’s brilliant that Nike are being inclusive and showing you how their clothes look good on all bodies.

Love,

Kate xx

P.s. Nike, how did you get your hands on my measurements?? Your mannequin looks exactly like me.

The Walpole Power List 2019 | 50 Most Influential People in British Luxury

Kate HalfpennyComment

The inaugural Walpole Power List, in association with Inzito and Coutts, was revealed at a party at Ennismore Sessions House last week and I’m absolutely over the moon to say that I’ve been named one of the 50 Most Influential People in British Luxury!

Following Walpole’s same-day announcement that the British luxury sector is now worth £48 billion to the UK economy – an increase of 49% in four years – the Power List celebrates the people steering the sector to success with its roll call of the 50 Most Influential People in British Luxury: the Entrepreneurs, Founders, Game-Changers, Gurus, Heroes, Legends, Mavericks, Rising Stars, Storytellers and Tastemakers within the Walpole membership.

“British luxury has a unique sensibility – its products and experiences make the country famous throughout the world for creativity, craftsmanship, innovation and the ability to conjure new, exciting, relevant stories from a magical past. But what makes British luxury a £48 billion power house is the exceptional ability of the people inside its brands, and Walpole’s annual Luxury Power List recognises and celebrates fifty talented individuals and their impact on this extraordinary, fast-growing sector.” - Helen Brocklebank, CEO of Walpole

Naturally, I’ve been included in the “Mavericks” category - a fact I’m highly proud of! Thrilled to be sitting alongside the other Mavericks:

Alan Scott, Creative Director, Johnstons of Elgin
Marcus  Wareing, Chef Patron, Marcus Wareing Restaurants
Frieda Gormley and Javvy M Royle, Co-Founders, House of Hackney
Justin Redman, Director & Co-Founder, RWD
Jessica McCormack, Founder, Jessica McCormack

Thank you so much to Walpole for this wonderful honour. I plan to live up to my title…

Love,

Kate & the Halfpennys xxx

Gorgeous Leanne | A real Halfpenny London bride

Kate Halfpenny2 Comments

I was thrilled to see beautiful bride Leanne’s wedding featured over on Love My Dress. Leanne had quite a journey in finding her dream dress… Her Halfpenny London Ivy skirt and Gordon top combo was actually her second wedding outfit. She’d had the first made by another designer but 10 days out from the wedding decided it wasn’t right for her so came to us instead. We pulled out all the stops to get Leanne’s outfit made in time for her big day and all that effort paid off as look how happy she is!

Read more about her story and see the full gallery over on Love My Dress.

I do love a happy ending! Congratulations to the newlyweds!

Lovely Lilli | A real Halfpenny London bride

Kate Halfpenny3 Comments

Beautiful bride Lilli and her new hubby Ross tied the knot in September last year. They flew to Italy for an incredibly romantic and whimsical elopement.

Lilli and I actually have a personal connection through one of my friends so when I heard she was getting married I was delighted to help her find her dream dress. Lilli wanted a real fairytale moment and the pairing of the off-the-shoulder Daffodil dress and Dita Dandelion skirt ticked all the boxes.

“As we chose to elope in Italy I really wanted to feel like a princess so pairing the two pieces together represented that perfectly. I then had a reception in California where my husband is from where I wore the skirt and one reception in Vancouver where my family is from and wore the dress. It was so special to wear all of them for each occasion.”

I adore how Lilli changed up her outfit for events surrounding her wedding. It’s one of the things I love about creating separates, that brides can be so versatile and do their own thing.

Lilli is radiant in these beautiful images by Gabriele Fani Photographer and that stunning scenery is giving me very itchy feet...!

Huge congratulations to the newlyweds! We wish them every happiness in the world.

Love,

Kate & the Halfpennys xxx

Jeff | Our Wedding Dress of the Week

Kate HalfpennyComment

It’s possible I’ve told a little fib… Our wedding dress of the week is not a dress at all. It’s a jumpsuit!

Ladies, Meet Jeff… The jumpsuit of dreams! The textured, crinkle-pleated fabric is so luxe and gives the most wonderful movement. if your granny is horrified at the thought of you wearing trousers to walk down the aisle it looks equally amazing under one of our epic overskirts, then you can have two looks in one!

Degas | Our Wedding Dress of the week

Kate HalfpennyComment

Meet Degas… This dress was a huge favourite with everyone who came to see us during bridal market. Due in the boutique this July, I know it’s going to be so popular with our brides.

This gown has a subtle shimmer thanks to the lurex thread woven into the Cornelli embroidered tulle. It sparkles so beautifully in the light and the texture is utterly delicious. The dress itself is sheer and is show here over the Iris slip. The three quarter sleeves and keyhole back give the perfect finishing touch.

Lydia Millen wears Halfpenny London at the Cannes Film Festival 2019

Kate HalfpennyComment

Lovely Lydia Millen dazzled on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday wearing our Mayfair gown in blush. The Mayfair dress is part of The Air That We Breathe collection.  It’s a reimagining of that nipped in waist and princess skirt silhouette I used to draw as a child. I’m completely in love with those sleeves and the airy skirt with the frills of organza is to die for! The Mayfair is also available in Ivory. Click here to see more.

We’ve worked with Lydia ever since she choose Halfpenny London for her wedding day and it’s always such a pleasure to have her in the boutique. Her fittings were a dream!
