SUSTAINABILITY

At Halfpenny London, we are proud to design with a conscience. Here are details of our sustainability initiatives and some of the steps we’re taking to be more environmentally friendly.

Made in England

Halfpenny London designer and founder, Kate Halfpenny, is passionate about British manufacturing so we’re proud to make all our garments in England, with the vast majority of these made in London, either in our Atelier in Woburn Walk or at one of our external production sites.

Say no to landfill

Each Halfpenny London bridal garment is made to order so there is no unsold stock to end up in landfill at the end of each season.

Wedding Gown Donations to good causes

We donate some of our bridalwear to Brides Do Good, a charity which donates a percentage of profits to support projects working to empower girls and end child marriage.

Repurpose off-cuts and dead stock fabrics

We always try to find the beauty in the tiniest piece of cloth and repurpose off-cuts of fabric in our bridal collection where possible to maximise efficiency and minimise waste. For example, the silk organza flowers which adorn many of our garments are made from waste fabric from one of our best-selling skirts. Deadstock or left over fabric are made into unique, one-off garments for brides to purchase at our sample sales.

Inspiring the next generation of fashion designers

Any left over fabrics we are unable to re-use are donated to schools and universities to use in their own designs to inspire the next generation.

Re-wear, re-love

We encourage our brides not to think of their wedding dress as a single wear garment. Instead, it’s an investment, an heirloom piece. We encourage them to incorporate the piece into their wardrobe styled in a different way, or perhaps altered to remove the train from a skirt, for example. Many of our pieces need no alterations at all to enjoy time and again and we love seeing women re-wear their wedding looks after the big day.

Being kinder to the environment with our everyday choices

Where possible, we keep the sharing of information digital and are mindful of the small everyday choices which can build up to a big change. We recycle where possible and reuse plastics. When printing is essential, we use recycled paper and environmentally friendly ink.

Everyday changes which add up to a big impact

  • We use biodegradable plastic garment bags to protect our dresses

  • We used recycled tape for all packaging

  • We use environmentally friendly ink on all of our packaging

  • We use recycled paper bags and boxes for our outbound shipments

  • We are sourcing eco-friendly and recycled fabrics to incorporate into future collections

Giving back

We support organisations to help offset our carbon footprint.

Peatbog

  • Peatbog and woodland regenerates our environment and we support the following local projects:

    • Doddington North - Continuous cover sustainable forestry and native broadleaf riparian planting

    • Corriechuillie - Enhancing ecological diversity through sustainable land-use management

    • Tom’s Wood - New native woodland creation for greater habitat connectivity

    • Gameshope Loch - Restoring degraded bog habitat in the Scottish Borders

Sea Trees

Sea Trees works to reverse climate change. SeaTrees directly supports communities and scientists who protect and regenerate blue-carbon coastal ecosystems. This includes planting mangrove trees, restoring kelp forests, coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and conserving coastal watersheds.'Blue-carbon' coastal ecosystems - like mangrove forests - are 5-10x more effective than a rainforest at removing carbon from the air.
