New Songbird Collection launched at NYBFW

I’m so pleased to now be able to share my new Songbird collection with you. My initial inspiration for this collection came from an abandoned bird’s nest I found in the garden. It was so perfect and intricate and I was amazed that a bird was able to create such a masterpiece using only it’s beak. It was so precious and had immense meaning and value, yet was made using only scraps.

We make a skirt called the Riri, which is cut from meters of silk organza. The fabric is cut into circles, then the centre is removed to create the delicious frills. There’s a lot of wastage created and I couldn’t bear to throw all these small circles and off cuts away, so I’ve been saving them. I was desperate to find a way to repurpose the scraps and I came up with the idea to make them into the most beautiful little flowers for my new collection, each and every one handmade by my darling mum. (More on that here!) She always taught me to find the beauty in the tiniest piece of cloth and it’s a philosophy I always try to live by.

Much like the bird painstakingly moulding her nest, I’ve thoughtfully crafted a collection of delicious heirloom pieces for brides-to-be to love and enjoy on their big day and for many years to come.

Love,

Kate & the Halfpennys xxx
