Halfpenny London

Beautiful Chloe | A real Halfpenny London bride

Kate Halfpenny2 Comments

I’m not going to lie… This wedding had all the girls in the office swooning. Stunning bride, handsome groom (in uniform no less!), a cool industrial chic venue and the oversized flowers of dreams!

Gorgeous bride Chloe married her new hubby Luke in December last year. The couple described their big day style as simple and classic, with an industrial edge. Their venue was just perfect for their metallics and monochrome colour scheme and I love the hint of marble!

Although Chloe was a little concerned about the prospect of dress shopping, I’m pleased to say she had nothing to worry about!

“Halfpenny was the only dress shop I visited! I first saw Halfpenny London at the Most Curious Wedding Fair at the Truman Brewery in 2017 & fell in love with a dreamy sequin skirt. I started following Halfpenny on Instagram after that & the obsession grew from there! I knew Halfpenny was very me so was never really interested in looking elsewhere!

My first appointment was so special! I took my Mom & two bridesmaids, my sister & sister in law, along. I am very particular so was prepared for this to be the most stressful shopping experience of my life, but it was far from it!”

Chloe chose the Willow dress which suited her and the style of her big day perfectly.

“Although I loved the sequin skirt I spotted at the wedding fare, after months of stalking the Halfpenny Instagram, it was the Andrea silk crepe skirt & Laura drape top I had set my heart on - although I did have quite a few screenshots of the back of the Willow that I just couldn’t stop looking at. I tried the Willow on first & got THE FEELING straight away! That threw me completely as I was convinced I would go for the skirt & top combination. After trying on a few picks from my mom & bridesmaids, along with pretty much every skirt & top in the store (everything was just so beautiful), my mind just kept going back to the Willow!  I loved how different the dress was to anything I had ever seen before (still to this day I have never seen anything quite like it!) & the back of the dress was just so spectacular!

Thank you so much to Chloe for the kind words and also to Luke for sharing these gorgeous images with us! We’re so pleased to have played a small part in your big day and wish you every happiness in your lives together!

Kate HalfpennyComment

Although we’ve technically been back a little while, my feet still haven’t touched the ground! We had the most incredible time in New York earlier this month where we were met lots of our amazing current and prospective stockists while also welcoming the press into our little Halfpenny London world.

It was a crazy few days of back to back appointments but I’m thrilled to say we have some fabulous new stockists to be announced soon so watch this space!

Until next time NYC…

Gorgeous Ruth | A real Halfpenny London bride

Kate Halfpenny2 Comments

Beautiful bride Ruth and her gorgeous hubby tied the knot in September last year. Inspired by her Spanish heritage, Ruth captured the magic of the Andalusian countryside for her big day.

“It was authentic and rural with wild flowers and olive leaves everywhere. In the chapel, I tried to re-create the wedding scene from Baz luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet with candles everywhere.”

Ruth chose our Sarah dress as she was looking for something elegant and classic.

“Halfpenny was the only dress shop I visited, and it was the second dress I ever tried on. My stylist quickly picked out about 5 dresses and her enthusiastic energy instantly made me feel at ease. I was a bit anxious but within 10 mins I got into it and felt amazing when I left. The boutique is pretty and cozy inside. I chose the Sarah dress because I wanted something very simple – that would just fall off my frame. I felt like a movie star in it. From the moment I put that dress on, I knew it was the one. My mum’s eyes started watering and I felt gorgeous in it. I felt on a natural high and could imagine walking down the aisle in it.”

Thank you for sharing your gorgeous images with us Ruth! You looked wonderful and we wish you and your hubby all the very best in your new lives together.

Marylebone Veil | Our Wedding Dress of the Week by Halfpenny London

Kate HalfpennyComment

I absolutely love a veil! I love the drama of it, the sheer decadence. Your wedding day is one of the very few occasions when you can wear one so if you’re going to go for it then you may as well go big! The Cathedral length Marylebone veil ticks every box for me. The beautiful lace trim is so delicate and pairs beautifully with the Marylebone sleeves and Finsbury dress (pictured above).

The Painter Collection launched at LBFW | New Collection by Halfpenny London

Kate HalfpennyComment

“From the moment I laid eyes on Vittorio Matteo Corcos’s work, I was completely drawn into his sumptuous world. I love everything about it, from the combination of colours and textures to the sense of pride and grandeur exuding from the frame. As a constant collector of portraits old and new, I’m fascinated by their romance and intimacy. The ability of a truly wonderful artist to allow the viewer to glimpse the character and spirit of the subject, as seen through the artist’s eyes, is incredibly inspiring to me. In The Painter collection, I offer brides a window into my world and I’m very excited to present this collection of contemporary, yet timeless designs.”

Kate Halfpenny

The Painter collection by Halfpenny London celebrates the intrigue of the subject, the passion of the artist and the beauty of the finished masterpiece in equal measure. Inspired by the art of La Belle Époque, the painter collection is overflowing with sumptuous fabrics and exquisite detailing.

Using fabrics as her muse, designer Kate Halfpenny has approached this season with the playfulness, freedom and expert skill of an artisan, indulging her passion for textiles by designing and creating unique embroideries in house. The graphic lines which have become Halfpenny London’s signature are softened with feminine trim. Creamy embroidery peeks from the seams of pockets and pleated tulle plunges into a deep V back.

With each piece named after one of Kate’s favourite artists, The Painter collection is a distinctly modern edit of gowns and separates which will captivate and complement brides who desire stand out, stylish and sophisticated design.

The new designs are coming soon and will be in store in July.

Me and my Mama | Kate Halfpenny on working with her mother, Josephine

Kate HalfpennyComment

My wonderful mum’s influence on me is profound and far-reaching.  Josephine was a knitwear designer and my design career started when I used to sit under her table when I was little, gathering up all of her scraps of wool and fabric to make dresses for my dolls.

Halfpenny London started as a teeny, tiny business in my home after graduating in the late 90’s from my fashion degree.  Back in the early days, mum would embroider brides’ initials into their dresses, something she still does with my bespoke pieces.  We have an interesting working relationship, the roles reverse sometimes and I become her assistant!

I’m sure you’ve seen our fabulous Riri skirt which gorgeous Lydia Millen wore for her wedding?  It’s been so popular but there was always something that played on my mind about the wasted fabric from making it.  The skirt is made with meters and meters of the most wonderful silk organza which is cut up to make the hundreds of frills,  the offcuts are small, odd shapes. As mum has always taught me to find the beauty in the smallest of things I set to work on using these scraps. For my next collection (which I’ll be launching in October) I’ve figured out a way to repurpose those little off cuts into something new and wonderful, all with the help of my lovely mum!  Check out the video below to see what we’ve done and for a glimpse at one of the new dresses we’ll be launching in October.

My mum’s always pushing for more.  More colour!  More ruffles!  More embellishment!  I have to reign her back in, which is weird because it’s the other way around when I work with my team, I’m normally the one who gets carried away because I just love it so much.  She allowed me to express myself, encouraged my creativity and helped me find the beauty in the tiniest piece of cloth.  This is my mum’s legacy she’s bestowed on me and I will continue to honour it.

Happy Mother’s Day, especially to my wonderful mum.

Millie Mackintosh BAFTA gown | Behind the scenes

Kate HalfpennyComment

When Millie and I started to talk about what she was going to wear to the BAFTA’s, I couldn’t wait to get started!  After designing Millie’s delicious wedding dress I have a strong sense of her likes and dislikes.  Millie’s personal style is so defined and it was a pleasure to work with her for such a special night.

I designed the Mayfair dress for The Air That We Breathe collection.  It’s the organza gown of my childhood dreams!  Those incredible sleeves are to die for and the frills of silk organza on the light-as-a-feather skirt…  Delicious!  We decided to use the most wonderful nougat pink fabric for Millie’s dress which looked incredible next to Millie’s skin.

The gown features a stretch Duchess satin fit and flare shape which showed off Millie’s killer figure.  The frothy top layer is silk organza which has just the right amount of weight to stay bouncy and fluid but hold it’s wonderful shape.

Check out the video below for a behind the scenes look at the making of Millie’s dress in our Bloomsbury atelier, including a sneak peek into her fitting and the big night of the BAFTA awards.

London Bridal Market in our revamped atelier

Kate HalfpennyComment
Stride-by-Halfpenny-LDN-MARKET-MARCH-2019-BTS-2019-high-res-3 copy.jpg

What a whirlwind the past few days have been!  London Bridal Market is always a highlight of the year for us.  It’s a chance to invite stockists - both existing and new - to come and visit us in our wonderful atelier to see our brand new collection.  I absolutely love it!

We decided to refresh our atelier before opening the doors so we’ve changed the pink floor to “Livid” by Little Greene Paint Company and the walls have had a fresh lick of their “Obsidien Green”.  Our pink chair over in the boutique is always a favourite so we’ve added in more delicious Calvers and Suvdal velvet sofa’s and chairs in two different shades of blue. I love how the colours really pop against the dark walls.

One thing that’s not permanent that we wish were here to stay are the incredible fresh bloom installation by the talented team at McQueens Flowers.  They’re the best!  The colours are just to die for. If you want to create a magical effect for your wedding then I strongly suggest talking to their team, they really can make anything happen, check out their Instagram by clicking on the link above.

Being able to showcase our new pieces in our London home is so important to me.  I’m unbelievably grateful to everyone who came to visit us since Sunday.  I strongly feel that by inviting people into our own little world, into our lives, it gives a true representation of who we are and what we stand for.  I’m so proud to be a British brand and I’ve adored working with the Halfpennys and our wonderful suppliers to bring this vision to life.  There’s no time to rest because we’ll be heading to NYC Bridal Fashion Week before we know it!  Wish us luck!

Beautiful Dorothée | A real Halfpenny London bride

Our beautiful bride Dorothée tied the knot with the love of her life last summer in a gorgeous seaside wedding in south Bretagne, France.

Dorothée found her Halfpenny gown at out mega stockist in Paris, Metal Flaque. She saw the Jessica dress online and it was love at first sight… After being stressed she wouldn’t love it as much when she tried it, she tracked it down at Metal Flaque and luckily fell in love with it in person too!

Congratulations to you and your gorgeous hubby Dorothée! We wish you every happiness in your new lives together.

Beautiful Harriet | A real Halfpenny London bride

Kate Halfpenny2 Comments

Beautiful bride Harriet married her lovely hubby Drew in December last year. As the couple were getting married on Dartmoor National Park in the depths of winter, they decided to embrace the elements with a dark green colour scheme, a dress that would sway in the wind and lots of gorgeous winter flowers.

Harriet wore separates over an Iris slip to create her own unique look and we had so much fun during the appointment putting it together!

“I was very lucky and found my dream dress at Halfpenny London very quickly – it was the second (and last) dress shop I visited.  I had a particular style I was looking for which naturally narrowed down the designers I visited. Kate was amazing! Throughout the fitting it became apparent that there were certain elements of different dresses I loved. Kate threw the various items together and suggested a sash. As soon as I stepped out in the dress, I knew it was the one! I knew because of the way I felt in it – I felt like a princess and the prettiest I had ever looked. Also the look on my sister’s face gave away that it was the one!”

By combining the Iris Jacket and slip with a tulle skirt and Duchess satin sash, Harriet was able to experiment with combinations throughout the day.  The Iris Jacket has such exquisite detail and allowed Harriet to show off her back whilst still giving the appropriate amount of coverage for a church wedding and I love how she wore the Iris slip and sash for dancing in the evening!

Thank you to Harriet and Drew for sharing these stunning pictures with us. It’s always an incredible moment seeing how a couple’s vision comes together on their big day. Huge congratulations to the happy couple and we wish you all the love in the world!

Stunning Hannah | A real Halfpenny London bride

Kate HalfpennyComment

Beautiful bride Hannah married her beau in October last year. The couple tied the knot in the Catskills in upstate New York in a pair of beautiful, restored barns. The ceremony and cocktail hour were outside, set against the stunning foliage that the area is known for in October, letting the beautiful natural setting be the main focus.

Hannah chose the Daffodil top and Ivy skirt which she purchased from our lovely stockist, The One Bridal Boutique in NYC.

“I had been to a few appointments before but hadn’t found any dress that I was in love with. My sister in law actually found Halfpenny on Instagram and sent me a photo of a dress noting there was a boutique in NYC that carried the brand. I called Sue at The One without realising she wasn’t even open yet, and she let me come in and try the dresses on. I was her very first customer!

I chose the Daffodil top and Ivy skirt. I wanted a unique dress that also had a beautiful and classic silhouette and the pairing of these together was the perfect combination. I loved the shape and how comfortable the two pieces were together. The fringe brought a more relaxed, fun and whimsical element to the dress, given the rustic setting of the wedding I didn’t want anything too stuffy or rigid in material and style.“

I’m completely in love with Hannah’s entire wedding! Everything from the autumnal flowers to her burgundy velvet Aquazzura pumps. Delicious!

Congratulations to the happy couple and we wish you every happiness in your new adventures!

Beautiful Amy | A real Halfpenny London bride

Kate HalfpennyComment

Beautiful bride Amy and her lovely hubby tied the knot in a cosy and rustic countryside festival wedding full of personality and gorgeous Scottish touches.

“My husband is Scottish so we definitely wanted the wedding to include some of his Scottish traditions. But mainly, with it being a summer wedding and what with us both coming from very creative families, we wanted a very relaxed, rustic, country, festival theme.”

Amy found her Halfpenny London gown at one of our mega stockists. She decided on a Violet lace dress with a custom ivory silk slip.

“I have always loved Halfpenny dresses. Innovative, stylish, feminine and effortlessly chic, natural looking and oh so pretty. I have always loved lace and in my opinion, Halfpenny is the land of lace! I loved the idea of the layering that came with The Violet dress, the low back and the sweeping and feminine neckline. The train was also lovely and not too high maintenance for a grassy/summer wedding.

As soon as I saw the Violet, I never went back. it was everything I had dreamed for in one dress and to have my own custom silk slip underneath made it extra special. I looked in the mirror and felt luminous. Once I put it on, I could not imagine wearing anything else and I immediately felt like me on my best day. I could also move in it which was very important for me as I would have hated to have felt uncomfortable, like I could not move freely on the big day!”

I’m so in love with Amy’s choice of bouquet and her exquisite, bespoke engagement ring with it’s stunning emerald stone influenced her choice of accessories.

Massive congratulations to the happy couple! We wish you all the love in the world in your new lives together.

Gorgeous Anna | A real Halfpenny London bride

Kate HalfpennyComment

Beautiful bride Anna and her new hubby tied the knot in December last year. Their big day was a relaxed, countryside celebration surrounded by their nearest and dearest. Being a wedding planner herself, Anna has seen lots and lots of wedding dresses so she wanted something completely different that she really felt like herself in, eventually deciding to go with our sequinned Celine skirt, Oliver corset and Toby top.

“Susie was so lovely and made everyone feel so relaxed. She ‘got’ my style almost instantly and was so great and bringing out different combinations for me to try that she thought I’d love. My best friend pointed out the Celine skirt and I really wasn’t sure before I tried it on. But the second it was on I fell in love – it was so beautiful and so elegant – exactly what I wanted. We tried a few versions of the corset top before I got the right one but the team were so great at altering and trying different things!  I just knew [it was ‘the one’]! It was simple, elegant, not too ‘weddingy’ and felt so me.”

I’m absolutely thrilled Anna found her dream dress at Halfpenny London. Huge congratulations to the happy couple! We wish you every happiness in your new adventures together.

Stunning Stacey | A real Halfpenny London bride

Kate Halfpenny2 Comments

Beautiful bride Stacey and her gorgeous hubby tied the knot in August lat year in a classic, romantic wedding with a gorgeous blush colour scheme. Stacey had tried some dresses before coming to visit us but struggled to find exactly what she was looking for.

“Before visiting Halfpenny London, I visited two boutiques and tried on some beautiful dresses, but I didn’t ‘feel’ like me. I struggled to find something that was ‘classic’ but not boring, subtly sexy and still appropriate for a Catholic church wedding. The [Halfpenny London] boutique has a wonderful warm and cosy feel that puts you at ease the moment you step in the door. I felt like a little girl again playing dress up. I wanted to try on every dress in there and I still do!”

Stacey chose our Charlotte dress which was the perfect choice for her.

“I wanted a dress that was romantic, effortlessly elegant but still ‘cool’. The luxurious Italian silk draped so beautifully; it was dramatic without being too ‘fussy’. As soon as I tried it on I felt an emotional connection with the dress. I finally felt like a bride and I knew it was a dress that Giuseppe, my husband-to-be, would instantly recognise me in. The Charlotte dress doesn’t need any ‘bling’, but I did accessorise it with a cathedral length ‘blended’ veil (also form Halfpenny), the most comfortable Jimmy Choo shoes, a tiara from Dolecka and jewellery from my aunt as my ‘something borrowed’.”

Congratulations to the happy couple! Best wishes in your new lives together from all of us at Halfpenny London.
